Interview with The Tween

Image

The Tween came to join me and lay on the newly cleared floor in my craft room (yay me) as I was working on blog entries and she is supposed to be completing an assignment on social commentary in music. I know she must have been concentrating hard on this because she asked me if I thought it would be a good idea to do an interview with her to put on my blog. I figured why not?

In light of my post yesterday about not growing up too fast, my first questions are in relation to that. My contribution to our discussion is bolded and hers is not. Any additional comments by me are in italics.

What do you think is the worst thing about being an adult?

Paying bills.

Would you like to expand on that?

Let me think. Because I don’t think you should have to pay for necessities in life when the money could be spent on buying clothes or something.

Are you in a hurry to grow up?

No.

Why?

Well…. I don’t really want to go to high school because you get more homework and assignments to do then. I guess you get more stressed. And you get better clothes when you are younger.
Anything else?

Wait. What was the question again?

Are you in a hurry to grow up?

Ummmm not that I can think of really. I want to get my license. Dad says I should get a manual license so I can drive a manual and an auto.

What do you think about me writing?

Writing a blog or writing a story?

Both.

I think writing a blog is cool. I think it’s cool that you want to write books too because that’s what I want to do. If you ever get famous then I’ll be famous too!

What sort of things do you want to write about?

I like writing fiction. I don’t think I can write non-fiction because in school I’ve already discovered I’m terrible at that. Fiction doesn’t have to be real. It’s my imagination.

(I can attest to this. I am often finding the beginnings of stories on the computer and she certainly has a great imagination)

Do you want to stop reading over my shoulder? I’m trying to think of another question.

Mum. If you could meet any celebrity from the past who would it be?

I don’t know.

Audrey Hepburn? Elvis?

I really don’t know. What about you?

I want to meet Audrey Hepburn because even though I don’t really know her that well, she is really pretty and it would be interesting to ask her what it was like to act.

Do you think it’s important to be kind to other people?

Yeh. You have to be kind to people because you can’t judge them by what they look like. Imagine what the world would be like if people weren’t kind?

What do you think it would be like?

A cruel and sullen world. Hang on, what does sullen mean?

Angry I think.

I like that word…. (in theatrical voice) “A cruel and sullen world”.

Can I read this afterwards?

Maybe.

What sort of mother do you think I am?

(pulls face). I’m kidding. What sort of mother do you think you are?

I asked you the question.

Are all mothers the same?

I don’t know. No. I don’t think so.

You look out for your children. (Nods head).

Okay, I’ll think of something easier?

Like, why do I like Dance Moms?

Nooooo. Do you think it’s important to look for the blessings each day?

And that’s supposed to be an easier question?

(Laughter from me)

What was the question again?

Do you think it’s important to look for the blessings each day?

Yep. You need to look at what you’ve got and not what you don’t have. Although I think I need to have the new Dance Moms DVD (hint hint).

Do you have a favourite quote?

Oooh yes. “You can’t choose who walks into your life but you can choose which window to throw them out of”. I also used to like “When life gives you lemons, make orange juice and leave the world wondering how you did it”.

(I burst out laughing)

Do you like a clean and tidy house?

I don’t know. Maybe some rooms in the house like the loungeroom and kitchen but I think it’s more cosy to have my room messy. I can’t believe you have a whole room for your craft stuff and it still ends up on the kitchen table.

That’s enough thank you. How’s your assignment going?

I still have to write musical elements and a conclusion. I don’t like that it’s an oral presentation and I have to speak in front of the whole class. Can I ask you a question?

Did you like writing when you were younger?

Yes. I wrote a lot of poetry when I was younger. I wrote other stuff too.

Fiction or non-fiction?

Fiction.

Give me one more question.

I don’t know what to ask.

Think of something. Make it simple.

Okay. How do you think you can help people who are really sad?

Hmmmm (tosses eraser in air and catches it). I guess it depends what they are sad about. If they are sad about losing a family member, it’s different to someone who is sad about not getting a good grade or something.

So what if they don’t know why they are sad?

This is not really easy. I’m trying to think but I don’t know. That’s really difficult to answer. What would you do?

Tell them if they want to talk about it, you will listen. Do you think that would help?

Sometimes people get mad and say “I’m fine. I don’t want to talk about it”.

What do you do if they say that?

I say “I’m here if you want to talk”.

That’s a good answer.

Thanks for spending time answering my questions today. Now get back to your homework!

  1. I love her quotes!!! I also like that you are talking to her about what she would do if she knew someone who was sad. Funny thing, my blog for tomorrow was based upon an “interview” with my oldest son. Great minds think alike.

    1. Awesome. Looks like we’ve got that ‘psychic’ connection thing happening there April. lol
Yes. Her quotes certainly encapsulate her sense of humour! She actually wrote out one of them and stuck it to the wall in our spare room beside an inspirational one I have put up. lol

  2. The development of the tween brain is an incredible thing as evidenced by your interview, which I love! Tweens are deep thinkers one minute and the next only focused on buying clothes. I think this will become even more of a treasure years from now, when you look back! Thanks for sharing it took me back to when I was living with tweens and always felt like I had to be “on my toes!”

    1. Ha ha. I don’t know that I planned any of it. She was trying to get away from doing her assignment and talk me into buying her the next Dance Moms DVD. It was a diversionary tactic lol

  3. I love that most youth have such a way of consideringing the deep meaning while maintaining an easy attitude ( tossing the eraserin the air) . You obviously have a great relationship together . I think she deserves the Dance Moms DVD sooner than later ha ha….Ilove that show

  4. its good that I have a thirteen yo — he’s got me thinking and I’ve got him thinking — we have times similar to what you shared — parenting is good — at thirteen, he’s got interests that are only vaguely familiar to me — I hope I’m being useful — sometimes its difficult to know
