Consider the lilies

Yesterday whilst I was completing tasks around the house a scripture verse came to me.

25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

– Matthew 6:25-29

I believe that inspiration and words for our life come to us at the times we need them most. I certainly was not thinking about anything other than the little things I needed to do around the house when this popped into my head but reading the verse in context now, I know it was a message to me.Like many people, I become so caught up in the ‘what ifs’ and ‘whys’ of life that I tend to overlook the obvious. And the obvious is that I am a part of life and it’s divine plan.
I need not worry about what the future holds because after all, worry will only rob my enjoyment of the now.
This morning I pulled a card from my little pile of affirmations. “There is always something to be thankful for”.
This is so very true.
It doesn’t matter what happens in life, there is always something in there to be thankful for. Whether it is the fact that you have food in your belly or the prospect of a sunny day, we have much to be thankful for. I am reminded that gratitude needs to become a bigger part of my life.
Just for fun I randomly picked another card from my little pile. This one said “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. Lao Tzu”.
So with the wisdom from the great teachers of the past ringing in my ears, I step forward into a new day.

Tell me, what words have spoken to you either today or in the past.

    1. I am okay Drew just spend too much time worrying about things that I shouldn’t. I think this verse just stopped me in my tracks. After all, it has been years since I studied the Bible and it just popped into my head and I don’t believe in coincidences.

  1. Here is the link to one of my gratitude journal entries

    At least we didn’t die

This is a reference to a quote attributed to Buddha. “Let’s rise and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we may have learned a little. And if we didn’t learn even a little, at least we didn’t get sick. And if we did get sick, at least we didn’t die. So let us all be thankful.” There is some question about if the quote is from Buddha or Leo Buscaglia but when I’m having a really bad day it generally makes me laugh and I put it in my gratitude journal.
Today I’m grateful for funny and inspiring quotes and blogging!

  2. Thank you for asking! I’m happy to tell you. And, by the way, what a thoughtful and encouraging post, brimming with wise words! You had me at “…come to us at the times we need them most.” I believe everything, including people, arrives with exquisite timing.

“Your thoughts create.” This is the most powerful truth etched upon my psyche.
“Worry is a prayer for what you don’t want.” This (thankfully) stops me in my anxious tracks.
“Live to work, don’t work to live.” Do what you were put on earth for and watch what happens!

    1. I think the Beatles often disguised wise words within their songs. That is a great collection of quotes.
And yes, I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe these things come to us when we need them most.

      1. I agree! Never underestimate the power of song lyrics; they’re truth and guidance and brave self-expression, set to music. The melody may obscure the meaning at first, but all it takes is one well-placed word or a phrase that hooks you and there you are, pouring over prose that thrills and resonates and, sometimes, moves you to tears.

  3. Lovely post Sue
Particularly like the saying Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
We could use that saying for everything we do in life.
    Cheers
