Once again I have participated in Leanne Cole’s Monochrome Madness. The talent of photographers around the world is just amazing and you can see them on her blog in the link above.
This week, I shared a photo that I had taken on one of our road trips back in 2009 along the Great Ocean Road. Some of you may have seen this image before but I will post it again for those who haven’t.
As you can see, the photograph above is not monochrome. This meant that I needed to convert it.
I convert all of my images to B&W using a process in Photoshop (very early version) that I learned a long time ago using lab colour, grayscale and layers and blending modes. Only this time, I added an extra layer and a different blending mode. A little dodging and burning and I was very happy with my result.
I spent a lovely afternoon ‘playing’ in photoshop and I now have quite a number of monochrome images just waiting to be sent to Leanne each week for her challenge. 🙂
If you’ve never looked at the photography of Leanne (and Laura Macky who helps Leanne in running this) then please jump over and do so. And whilst you are there, don’t forget to check out the awesome photos from everyone else. And if you would like to enter a photo, then the instructions are in Leanne’s blog post.
Have a beautiful day everyone.
Beautiful Sue 😀

Thanks so much John. I’ve discovered that some photos work better than others using this conversion. It depends on the background.

Great photo Suz. I still can’t find her overflow of images on the news post. though.

I wonder if Laura Macky can shed any light on that. I know Leanne is away for a few days.

I don’t know, maybe it just didn’t make the cut.

I don’t know. I guess emailing Leanne might be the best way to find out.

It doesn’t matter Suz, I was only wondering.

I really prefer the bright happy colors, but the monochrome gives it a certain depth, doesn’t it? Quite transformative!

I love them both. I actually have the colour photo blown up and printed out. I was thinking I might do the same with the B&W.

No one could find fault with that!

It’s fun to mess with photos and give them a new feel–but I haven’t done much of it. I like the look of the monochrome photo, but I really love the color, and feel of the first one! I may have to quit procrastinating.

I could lose hours playing with photos and creating images in photoshop. I don’t do it nearly enough.

Eddie took the words out of my mouth. I liked the high key processing. I also like the color too. Basically you really have to have a good photo to start with and you did! 🙂

I think the fact that the background was light certainly helped. I really did like the effect.

And Laura spoke my exact thoughts 🙂 Conversion doesn’t work well if the foundations aren’t there in the original photo. Love the color version because of the unique colors of the boat; but the effect of the high key processing is wonderful!

Great work Sue, I’ve noticed that when I try that method the results really do depend on the original picture, your worked well.

Most definitely Ian. I think high key images work well with lighter backgrounds and greater contrasts.
