We visited my in-laws on the weekend and whilst the Garden Gnome assisted with a big job that needed doing, the Teen and I chatted with MIL. She had taken a screen out of the window and was cleaning cobwebs when she said to us “We should take care of all Gods creatures but I just don’t understand what he was thinking when he created spiders……..and snakes!”
We couldn’t help it. The Teen and I both laughed out loud.
No point in the story of Eden without the snake.

The spiders and snakes are likely thinking the same thing: “Just what is the purpose of humans, but to torture us?” π

I agree with your MIL. This post immediately brought to mind an old country song by Jim Stafford, chorus goes:
She said, “I don’t like spiders and snakes
And that ain’t what it takes to love me
You fool, you fool
I don’t like spiders and snakes
And that ain’t what it takes to love me
Like I want to be loved by you”

Like her way of thinking, indicates she has a very caring personality.
Pity more people didn’t see the world through your MIL’s eyes.

I’m not sure what snakes are good for unless you’re talking about black snakes that will take care of such things as mice and other unwanted critters around the home. Now spiders have a wonderful job, that it as long as they’re not black widow spiders. They will take care of all those pesty flying insects that are prevalent in the home during the warmer months (which is on it’s way to you). You won’t have to worry about flies, mosquitoes, or moths in your house. And they don’t get all that upset when you clean out their webs either.
When I was a young single mother, my son and I lived in one side of a duplex. The place was over 30 years old so the flying creatures could always find their way into our home. My son and I decided to take care of the problem in a natural way. We invited two spiders to stay with, the clear understanding that I’d be cleaning out their webs every three months. Henry took care of the creatures at the front of the unit. Gilda took care of the ones in the back part. Henry had his web in the front ceiling corner of the living room. Gilda had hers in the back ceiling corner of my bedroom. We had good relations with them for four years. π

I had two in my home once but they kind of freaked me out a bit after a while so I relocated them. Love your story Glynis.

Mostly spiders are good for keeping other insects away or just eliminate them. What snakes are good for, I can only see as food for other animals and those humans, who like their taste too.
For me they are creepy, because I never know their next step. They are so unpredictable.

The weather has started warming up and snakes are out and about in these parts again. I just hope they stay away from my garden.
