Of Rainbows, Unicorns and Happily Ever After

Don’t you just wish that my title summed up life?
I know I do and more often than I care to admit.
Yet if there is one thing that I have learned over the past months and weeks is that any ‘happily ever after’ is entirely up to me!
That’s right.
Me!!!!!
Kinda puts a lot of responsibility on a gal you know?
Having the sole responsibility for my own happiness is a big deal.

It is so much easier when I can shift the responsibility to someone else to make me happy. Then I have someone to blame when life doesn’t work out as I think it should. I mean, it’s not my fault that things happen so I believe I should have the right to blame someone. Anyone will do. As long as it isn’t me.
At least that’s what society tells me I should do.
Never accept responsibility for the things I do wrong.
Point the finger at everyone who doesn’t live up to my standards of right and wrong.
It’s their decisions that shape my life – not mine.

Of course, there are circumstances beyond our control. We can’t control the actions of narcissists, Mother Nature, bullies or others that create an impact upon our lives. So it makes sense that I should be able to continue blaming them for everything that goes wrong in myΒ  life ever after. After all, if my narcissistic, emotionally abusive ex husband hadn’t been in my life, I’d be living the life I’d always dreamed of right now. Right?

Wrong!
My life now is a reflection of the choices and decisions I have made up until this present point in time.
Is it full of rainbows, sunshine, unicorns and lollipops? Not all the time, but then too much sugar isn’t good for you. And if things were always going my way, what kind of lessons are there to learn?
Is it because of my ex-husband (or any other number of things that have happened to me over the years)? No!
Happiness lies within all of us. It’s just waiting for us to brush away the muck that is concealing it and bring it forth in our lives once more.
It’s waiting for us to begin being grateful that this morning saw us wake up breathing with a whole new blank canvas for the day ahead.
It’s waiting for us to forgive the narcissists, bullies, Mother Nature and other cruel villains from our past. It’s not asking us to forget. Don’t confuse the two.
When we forget, we also forget the lessons that we learned at the time.
When we forgive, we move on and find joy in the future.
When talking about forgiveness, the best quote I have ever read came from Robert Holden in his book “Shift Happens”

β€œFor as long as you carry a grievance,

You become a casualty in your own war.”

– Robert Holden –

So do you long for a life of rainbows, unicorns, sunshine, lollipops and happily ever after?
Then reach inside and rediscover where your joy and happiness is hiding and bring it forth once more. It’s there. It just needs a little bit of attention to encourage it to stick around.
And rainbows? They’re always there after the rain. Dolly Parton once said that we have to put up with a little rain in order to find the rainbows.
And unicorns?
The Irish Rovers have a theory about why they’re a rarity these days.

However here’s a little rainbow to brighten your day.
It certainly blessed me when I took the photo. Unfortunately, although one side ended on the beach right below me, there was no pot of gold.
Well no physical pot of gold anyway. πŸ˜‰

Blessings to you all!

  1. You are right Sue. We are responsible for our own happiness and actions in life. When we recognize that, life becomes much more easy to live.
I use to say, that I’m the only responsible for my mood. If I become angry or mad, it is my problem and also my responsibility to be good again. It can never be others responsibility.
Wish you a happy new week πŸ™‚

  2. Beautiful post, Sue. It is up to us to find our own happiness. I like to blame myself for not being happy because I’m flawed. But we’re all flawed….unless we are a narcissist. πŸ™‚

  3. I share you viewpoint Sue – I believe we are indeed responsible for our happiness. And while it can be annoying not to be able to point fingers and pass off responsibility, the truth is it’s actually quite empowering to know I’m the creative force behind it all.

What a gorgeous photo. And while there may not have been a pot of gold at the end, I’m betting there well may have been a unicorn that just slipped away a second before you got there. After all they have to keep moving – there are so few of them and so many of us who want to see them. πŸ™‚

    1. Hello Miss Robyn! I’ve missed our online chats. x
Isn’t it funny how when you write things for yourself, others find it equally as helpful? It makes you realise that we’re all the same no matter how different we all are.

  4. Reblogged this on Linda G. Hill and commented:
I really needed this today – been feeling a bit sorry for myself lately. I thought I’d share it with you all, in case you’re in need of it too.

  5. I like that you include – Forgive…but not forget.
That shift can be very tiresome sometimes. I guess we have to go through the motions whilst we process stuff to find the ‘where we are going wrong’ aspect.
Feeling sorry for ourselves is pretty natural… so long as we got that mirror pointed at us not someone else. It helps put a lot in perspective. It helps to see where we are doing GOOD too… which helps lift us out the little pity party pit. πŸ™‚
The wisest move I learned (still struggle to apply though) is in those times to hunker down through the storm of self, lest we injure others in our flailing for our truth we know is buried. We flail because we know we are not seeing something clearly (again!).
Anyway, just some thoughts, that come to me reading this. GREAT WRITE SUZ!

    1. Good for your Elaine. I try my best to choose happy but sometimes, someone always manages to *&%# me off. I then need to spend time talking myself out of the mood and meditating on peace.

  6. Wow, wow, triple wow!! happiness is indeed within us. I kinda like that I have control and if the place is messy for example or I forgot to put out the garbage, I am much more forgiving of myself if it only impacts on me. If it affects other people, I will feel bad, admit it and try to fix it. Happiness are moments that we keep repeating in our mind’s eye especially when things are just so so. Great post and amazing photo…plus you just can’t go wrong with the Irish Rovers!
